CSI celebrates completion of phase one conservation of U.S. Capitol Senate Wing
[09-09-2016] CSI is very proud to be completing the first phase of stone and bronze conservation at the Senate (north) Wing of the U.S. Capitol in Washington DC. Working with Grunley Construction and Lorton Stone, we have performed laser cleaning and consolidation of the marble as well as overseen or performed conservation of the bronze urns, lighting fixtures, and railings. We also assessed and contributed to the treatment the pediment sculptures of the east elevation by Thomas Crawford from 1854, entitled Progress of Civilization. These beautiful carvings of local stone were cleaned and consolidated, a wooden sword and copper axe were restored, and we did other treatments to the weathered stone. Scaffolding will be removed prior to the upcoming inauguration. Phase two of the project will begin in early 2017.
