Artwork Collection Conservation Assessment - Alberta Foundation for the Arts
Established in 1972, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) is a crown agency of the Government of Alberta with the mandate to collect, preserve, and display works of Albertan art. The AFA works to foster and promote the enjoyment of the work of Albertan artists, as it is the only public collection dedicated solely to representing the breadth of the achievement of visual and fine craft artists within the province. The AFA is the primary arts funding body for the province, providing grant funding to artists and art organizations to encourage the growth and development of the arts sector.
The Collection consists of over 8,500 artworks showcasing the creative talents of more than 1,700 artists, presented in a wide range of media including paintings, photography, prints, drawings, ceramics, glass, fibre, sculpture, mixed media, multimedia, and installations.
Conservation Solutions (CSI) was contracted to carry out an assessment of 5900 of the AFA’s current artwork holdings and develop a multi-year strategy including recommendations for treatment, care, handling and exhibition procedures as well as facility and overall storage conditions.
