Assessment of the Casca III Paddle Wheel

Casca Paddlewheel, Whitehorse, Canada

Conservation Solutions (CSI) was contracted by the Yukon Government Department of Tourism and Culture to perform a detailed assessment of the remains of the Casca III paddle wheel in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. The paddle wheel is the only known remainder of the Casca III sternwheeler vessel, which burned in the Whitehorse Shipyard in 1974. The Yukon Territory has a rich history of sternwheerler ships that once dominated the transportation industry on its rivers and waterways.

The assessment of the paddle wheel was conducted to document the condition of the wheel as well its relevant manufacturing and historical features. CSI also provided recommendations and costing information for various preservation and disposition options.

CSI’s assessment included overall photographic documentation of the wheel and the site, a review and documentation of other potentially associated materials adjacent to the wheel, measurements of the site, wheel, and individual wheel components, evaluation of the condition of the extant materials (wood, paint, iron, cast iron, steel), paint sampling for later analysis, and lead testing.
